Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs Patient Database

Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs Patient Database Case Study

Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs is a Philadelphia institution that has been helping people in the Philadelphia area with eye care since 1888. Having been in business for over a hundred years they have a very large quantity of patient records in six different locations. To better serve their customers they wanted to convert these patient records to information stored in a database.

Web Application Solution

The best solution for this application was a centrally hosted, secured web application that would allow for the entering and storing of data from all locations via an Internet connected computer.

Data Entry

Forms were designed and created modeled off of existing internal work flows and paper forms to gather all relevant information.

Form features include:

Data validation to ensure patient information is correct.

Encryption so that when the form data is saved and transmitted across the Internet to the central database none of the information can be compromised.

Rapid work flow so that data entry is efficient with the form anticipating default or most-used values.

Data Queries

A database application is not very useful unless the data can be searched or queried to return meaningful information that can be exported for uses such as marketing. A Patient Search feature was incorporated into the application so that patient data could be searched and then exported to Excel to be used for marketing lists.

Project Scope

This application is the first phase in a larger application development cycle. The first problem Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs needed to overcome was to enter all the data from the various locations into a central database and then export it to Excel to be used for marketing purposes. They needed the application developed rapidly but also designed properly so that the application could be extended as they increased the level of automation of their business processes. MQUAL used industry standard design techniques and automated code generation tools to create this application in under a week without sacrificing the quality and scalability of the application.
